Discrete Gauge Theory
By: Oeckl, Robert
Published by: Imperial College Press

This book provides an introduction to topological quantum field theory as well as discrete gauge theory with quantum groups. In contrast to much of the existing literature, the present approach is at the same time intuitive and mathematically rigorous, making extensive use of suitable diagrammatic methods. It provides a highly unified description of lattice gauge theory, topological quantum field theory and models of quantum (super)gravity. The reader is thus in a unique position to understand the relations between these subjects as well as the underlying groundwork. more...

A Modern Introduction to Quantum Field Theory
By: Maggiore, Michele
Published by: OUP Oxford

Quantum field theory has undergone extraordinary developments in the last few decades and permeates many branches of modern research such as particle physics, cosmology, condensed matter, statistical mechanics and critical phenomena. This book introduces the reader to the modern developments in a manner which assumes no previous knowledge of quantum field theory, and makes it readily accessible from the advanced undergraduate level upwards. - ;The importance and the beauty of modern quantum field theory resides in the power and variety of its methods and ideas, which find application in domains as different as particle physics, cosmology, condensed matter, statistical mechanics and critical phenomena. This book introduces the reader to the modern developments, assuming no previous knowledge of quantum field theory. Along with standard topics like Feynman diagrams, the book discusses effective lagrangians, renormalization. group equations, the path integral formulation, spontaneous symmetry breaking and non-abelian gauge theories. The inclusion of more advanced topics will also make this a most useful book for graduate students and researchers. - ;The author gives a nice conceptual discussion of divergences in loop amplitudes, the need to renormalize, and how both renormalization group...he manages to convery the main ideas without getting lost in technical details. - Physics Today; All in all, Maggiore's approach is precisely the one that should be taken in an undergraduate course: Introduce the "big" ideas and leave the computational and thornier technical details for subsequent courses. - Physics Today;A Modern Introduction to Quantum Field Theory provides useful information. Books in the Oxford Master Series in Statistical, Computational and Theoretical Physics are aimed at final-year undergraduate and begining postgraduate students, providing straightforward introduction to key topics in physics. This book satifies these goals very well. - The Times more...

Precisely Predictable Dirac Observables
By: Cordes, Heinz Otto
Published by: Springer

Presents a "Clean Quantum Theory of the Electron", based on Dirac's equation. This book offers a mathematical explanation of the well known paradoxes of Dirac's theory, and a connection to classical theory, including the motion of a magnetic moment in the given field, all for a charged particle moving in a given electromagnetic field. more...

Proceedings Of The Dirac Centennial Symposium
By: Baer , Howard (ed.); Belyaev, Alexander (ed.)
Published by: World Scientific

Paul Adrian Maurice Dirac (1902–84) is one of the icons of modern physics. His work provided the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics. He also made key contributions to quantum field theory and quantum statistical mechanics. He is perhaps best known for formulating the Dirac equation, a relativistic wave equation which described the properties of the electron, and also predicted the existence of anti-matter. He was awarded the Nobel prize in Physics in 1933 along with Erwin Schreodinger for his contributions to quantum theory. The Dirac Centennial Symposium held commemorated the contributions of Dirac to all areas of physics, and assessed their impact on frontier research. This invaluable book constitutes the proceedings of the symposium, containing articles by Leopold Halpern, Pierre Ramond, Frank Wilczek, Maurice Goldhaber, Jonathan Bagger, Joe Lykken, Roman Jackiw, Stanley Deser, Joe Polchinski, Andre Linde and others. A special contribution from Dirac's daughter Monica Dirac presents a portrait of Paul Dirac as father and family man. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in:. • Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings). more...

Quantum Field Theory 1
By: Zeidler, Eberhard
Published by: Springer

Gives an introduction to quantum field theory, which addresses both mathematicians and physicists, at levels ranging from advanced undergraduate students to professional scientists. This book also presents the state-of-the-art of scientific realization of Einstein's dream of a constructing a theory for the four fundamental forces in the universe. more...

Quantum Field Theory in a Semiotic Perspective
By: Dosch, Hans Günter; Müller, Volkhard F.; Sieroka, Norman
Published by: Springer

Starts off with a non-technical outline of the firmly based aspects of relativistic quantum field theory, that is the description of subnuclear phenomena. The methods get described as distinct facets of quantum field theory. This book shows how the different facets, vary with respect to the relation between quantum fields and associated particles. more...
