MCQ in Biochemistry
By: Sagar, Vidya G.
Published by: New Age International
About the Book: Medical and Paramedical graduates aspiring for higher education planning to take PG ought to appear in entrance examinations. These entrance examinations are usually patterned in objective type. Biochemistry forms an integral part of curriculum of medical and paramedical courses. It is an important subject and deals with various Chemical, Biochemical, and Physiological reactions and processes that take place inside a living system. Quite a large number of MCQs appear in PG medical and paramedical competitive examinations in this subject. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) test a candidate`s ability to apply his knowledge gained during regular class work in the subject. Framing a questions paper based on MCQs is time consuming and evaluation of answers is not subjective and biased but on based on merit. Several universities now-a-days are adopting MCQ pattern for their examination system. This system of evaluation can be computerized and human bias can be eliminated to a greater extent. The Medical Council of India in their latest recommendations on the medical education and examination have stipulated that part of the question paper should be objective type based. The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka, the Tamil Nadu MGR Medical University, Tamil Nadu and the Rajasthan University of Health Sciences, Rajasthan also use the MCQ pattern in all their undergraduate and PG programmes of Medial and Paramedical courses. The quick solution books presently available for this subject in the market do not cover the subject in an integrated way. Acquiring knowledge becomes simple if all the required information is made available at one place. The MCQs in the book have been prepared with great care and after an exhaustive and extensive study of pattern of multiple choice questions in the subject. The questions are precise and clear enabling the reader to make correct choice based on his understanding of Biochemistry Contents: Ca

Adaption of Simulated Annealing to Chemical Optimization Problems
By: Kalivas, J.H.
Published by: Elsevier Science
Optimization problems occurring regularly in chemistry, vary from selecting the best wavelength design for optimal spectroscopic concentration predictions to geometry optimization of atomic clusters and protein folding. Numerous optimization tactics have been explored to solve these problems. While most optimizers maintain the ability to locate global optima for simple problems, few are robust against local optima convergence with regard to difficult or large scale optimization problems. Simulated annealing (SA) has shown a great tolerance to local optima convergence and is often called a global optimizer. The optimizaton algorithm has found wide use in numerous areas such as engineering, computer science, communication, image recognition, operation research, physics, and biology. Recently, SA and variations thereof have shown considerable success in solving numerous chemical optimization problems. The main thrust of this book is to demonstrate the use of SA in a wide range of chemical problems. The potentiality of SA, GSA and other modifications of SA to serve specific needs in a variety of chemical disciplines are covered. A detailed discussion on SA and GSA is given in Chapter 1, presenting the theoretical framework from which a computer program can be written by the reader. The remainder of the book describes applications of SA type algorithms to a diverse set of chemical problems. The final chapter contains an algorithm for GSA written in the MatLab programming environment. This program can be easily adapted to any optimization problem and with only slight modifications, can be altered to perform SA. A general flowchart is also given.
