Creatine and Creatine Kinase in Health and Disease
By: Salomons, Gajja S. (ed.); Wyss, Markus (ed.)
Published by: Springer

A number of beneficial health effects have been ascribed to oral creatine supplementation. Creatine may even improve memory and intelligence. This book emphasizes on the intricate interplay between creatine and creatine kinase function and proper brain function, neurodegenerative disease and/or neuroprotection. more...

Deconditioning and Reconditioning
By: Greenleaf, John
Published by: CRC Press

Deconditioning is an integrated physiological response of the body to a reduction in metabolic rate, that is, to a reduction in energy use or in exercise level. This multi-author volume presents selected background information on the many aspects of ground-based and inflight physiological research and applications and will be of special interest to health professionals and clinical physicians. The emphasis is on human research programmes on prolonged bed rest, immersion and confinement studies simulating conditions of space flight as well as data from humans in space. more...

Development of Neural Circuitry
By: Hobert, Oliver
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

The nervous system is complex in its structural order and in its ability to perform functions required for survival and interaction with environment. This work describes research on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of neural circuitry development, while offering researchers with an overview and synthesis of contemporary thought in the area. more...

Diverse Roles of Integrin Receptors in Articular Cartilage
By: Shakibaei, Mehdi; Csaki, Constanze; Mobasheri, Ali
Published by: Springer

Integrins are heterodimeric integral membrane proteins made up of a and A subunits. At least 18 a and 8 A subunit genes have been described in mammals. Integrin family members are plasma membrane receptors involved in cell adhesion and active as intra- and extracellular signalling molecules in a variety of processes including embryogenesis, hemostasis, tissue repair, immune response and metastatic spread of tumor cells. Integrin beta 1 (A1-integrin) the protein encoded by the ITGB1 gene (also known as CD29 and VLAB) is a multi-functional protein involved in cell-matrix adhesion, cell signalling, cellular defense, cell adhesion, protein binding, protein heterodimerization and receptor-mediated activity. It is highly expressed in the human body (17.4 times higher than the average gene in the last updated revision of the human genome). The extracellular matrix (ECM) of articular cartilage is a unique environment. Interactions between chondrocytes and the ECM regulate many biological processes important to homeostasis and repair of articular cartilage including cell attachment, growth, differentiation, and survival. The A1-integrin family of cell surface receptors appears to play a major role in mediating cell-matrix interactions that are important in regulating these fundamental processes. Chondrocyte mechanoreceptors have been proposed to incorporate A1-integrins and mechanosensitive ion channels which link with key ECM, cytoskeletal and signalling proteins to maintain the chondrocyte phenotype, prevent chondrocyte apoptosis and regulate chondrocyte-specific gene expression. more...
