Dynamics And Bifurcation Of Patterns In Dissipative Systems
By: Dangelmayr, Gerhard (ed.); Oprea, Iuliana (ed.)
Published by: World Scientific
Understanding the spontaneous formation and dynamics of spatiotemporal patterns in dissipative nonequilibrium systems is one of the major challenges in nonlinear science. This collection of expository papers and advanced research articles, written by leading experts, provides an overview of the state of the art. The topics include new approaches to the mathematical characterization of spatiotemporal complexity, with special emphasis on the role of symmetry, as well as analysis and experiments of patterns in a remarkable variety of applied fields such as magnetoconvection, liquid crystals, granular media, Faraday waves, multiscale biological patterns, visual hallucinations, and biological pacemakers. The unitary presentations, guiding the reader from basic fundamental concepts to the most recent research results on each of the themes, make the book suitable for a wide audience.

Dynamics Of Crowd-minds
By: Adamatzky, Andrew
Published by: World Scientific
A crowd-mind emerges when formation of a crowd causes fusion of individual minds into one collective mind. Members of the crowd lose their individuality. The deindividuation leads to derationalization: emotional, impulsive and irrational behavior, self-catalytic activities, memory impairment, perceptual distortion, hyper-responsiveness, and distortion of traditional forms and structures.

From Order To Chaos Il: Essays: Critical, Chaotic And Otherwise
By: Kadanoff, L P
Published by: Imperial College Press
This book is a compilation of the review papers, expositions and some of the technical works of Leo Kadanoff, a theoretical physicist. The objective is to put together a group of not-too-technical writing in which he discusses some issues in condensed matter physics, hydrodynamics, applied mathematics and national policy. This expanded edition is divided into five sections. The first section contains review papers on hydrodynamics, condensed matter physics and field theory. Next is a selection of papers on scaling and universality, particularly as applied to phase changes. A change of pace is provided by a series of papers on the critical analysis of simulation models of urban economic and social development.

Frontiers In Turbulence And Coherent Structures
By: Denier, Jim (ed.); Frederiksen, Jorgen S (ed.)
Published by: World Scientific
This book is based on the proceedings of the COSNet/CSIRO Workshop on Turbulence and Coherent Structures held at the Australian National University in Canberra in January 2006. It codifies recent developments in our understanding of the dynamics and statistical dynamics of turbulence and coherent structures in fluid mechanics, atmospheric and oceanic dynamics, plasma physics, and dynamical systems theory. It brings together articles by internationally acclaimed researchers from around the world including Dijkstra (Utrecht), Holmes (Princeton), Jimenez (UPM and Stanford), Krommes (Princeton), McComb (Edinburgh), Chong (Melbourne), Dewar (ANU), Watmuff (RMIT) and Frederiksen (CSIRO). The book will prove a useful resource for researchers as well as providing an excellent reference for graduate students working in this frontier area.

Instabilities, Chaos And Turbulence
By: Manneville, Paul
Published by: Imperial College Press
This book is an introduction to the application of nonlinear dynamics
to problems of stability, chaos and turbulence arising in continuous
media and their connection to dynamical systems. With an emphasis on
the understanding of basic concepts, it should be of interest to
nearly any science-oriented undergraduate and potentially to anyone
who wants to learn about recent advances in the field of applied
nonlinear dynamics. Technicalities are, however, not completely
avoided. They are instead explained as simply as possible using
heuristic arguments and specific worked examples.

Micro Meso Macro
By: Liljenström, Hans (ed.); Svedin, Uno (ed.)
Published by: World Scientific
In the domain of science concerned with systems structure and behavior, the issue of the relationship between the micro and the macro level is of key importance. This book concentrates on the interplay between these levels and has a special focus on the level in between the meso level. An investigation of those links is made through a number of cases from different domains of science, including physics, chemistry, ecology, social science, economics and technology. What is evident is that there are facets regarding meso-level issues that are similar between cases, but also that the domains differ in various ways. This is particularly exemplified by the differences in perspectives from which the natural and social sciences deal with scaling issues. The various examples provided in this book mirror its overriding theme: systems complexity.

Microscopic Chaos, Fractals And Transport In Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics
By: Klages, Rainer
Published by: World Scientific
A valuable introduction for newcomers as well as an important reference and source of inspiration for established researchers, this book provides an up-to-date summary of central topics in the field of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and dynamical systems theory. Understanding macroscopic properties of matter starting from microscopic chaos in the equations of motion of single atoms or molecules is a key problem in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. Of particular interest both for theory and applications are transport processes such as diffusion, reaction, conduction and viscosity. Recent advances towards a deterministic theory of nonequilibrium statistical physics are summarized: Both Hamiltonian dynamical systems under nonequilibrium boundary conditions and non-Hamiltonian modelings of nonequilibrium steady states by using thermal reservoirs are considered. The surprising new results include transport coefficients that are fractal functions of control parameters, fundamental relations between transport coefficients and chaos quantities, and an understanding of nonequilibrium entropy production in terms of fractal measures and attractors. The theory is particularly useful for the description of many-particle systems with properties in-between conventional thermodynamics and nonlinear science, as they are frequently encountered on nanoscales.
