In the Name of Honor
By: Mai, Mukhtar; Kristof, Nicholas D.
Published by: ATRIA BOOKS
In June 2002, journalists throughout the world began to hear of the gang rape of a Pakistani woman from the impoverished village of Meerwala. The rape was ordered by a local clan known as the Mastoi and was arranged as punishment for indiscretions allegedly committed by the woman's brother. While certainly not the first account of a female body being negotiated for honor in a family, and (sadly) not the last, journalists and activists were captivated. This time the survivor had chosen to fight back, and in doing so, single-handedly changed the feminist movement in Pakistan. Her name was Mukhtar Mai, and her decision to stand up to her accusers was an act of bravery unheard of in one of the world's most adverse climates for women. By July 2002, Mai's case was headline news in Pakistan and under international scrutiny, the government awarded her the equivalent of 8,500 U.S. dollars in compensation money (a historic settlement), and her attackers were sentenced to death. Mukhtar Mai went on to open a school for girls in an effort to ensure that future generations would not suffer, as she had, from illiteracy. In this rousing account, Mai describes her experience and how she has since become an agent for change and a beacon of hope for oppressed women around the world. Timely and topical, In the Name of Honor is the remarkable and inspirational memoir of a woman who fought and triumphed against exceptional odds.

It's Only Temporary
By: Handler, Evan
Published by: Riverhead
At 24, Evan Handler was a young actor with a thriving Broadway career when he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. He spent the next five years battling what he'd been assured was an incurable illness, determined to prove that assessment wrong. And he did: He has been considered cured now for nearly twenty years. But how easy is it to embrace a life you've been convinced youd never have? And what if your life doesn't seem all it was cracked up to be when it was nearly taken away? Handlers response was to chronicle a journey toward love and gratitude that's by turns heartfelt, shocking and very funny. Structured as a collection of linked autobiographical essays, Its Only Temporary is a startlingly candid and often hilarious portrait of one man's struggle to locate and embrace love and happiness within a life he knows hes lucky just to have. Its both a deeply personal memoir and a wide-ranging meditation on life, love, faith, gratitude, and mortality. It's Only Temporary is an unexpected coming-of-age story in which one man comes to accept the concept of mortality only after the most strenuous objections. In finally doing so, he discovers a life much richer than he ever hoped for.

Jim Brown
By: Freeman, Mike
Published by: PerfectBound
He intimidated people on and off the football field. He was brutal yet brilliant, narcissistic yet magnanimous, relentless yet unyielding. Most of all, he was the greatest football player of all time. He was Jim Brown. Jim Brown was an astonishing physical specimen with tremendous skills and intelligence. An athlete who played a number of sports at Syracuse University, he ultimately discovered that it was the violence of football that appealed to him most. The idea of physically dominating other men, surviving ferocious battles on the field against opponents who would just as soon call him a nigger as try to gouge out his eyes fueled an astonishing, record-making NFL career that led to the Hall of Fame. He battled his defenses, sometimes his teammates, and often the Cleveland Browns' legendary head coach Paul Brown. But Jim Brown had ambitions greater than football. He used his athletic brilliance to launch a movie career, becoming Hollywood's first black action hero, culminating in a scandalous love scene with America's sweetheart Raquel Welch. He leveraged his popularity into helping the NFL's black players and becoming a civil rights activist. Never shy about expressing his opinions, Brown would become the subject of FBI investigations and surveillance throughout parts of his life. Then there were the women. The patient wife who was essentially a single mother and who endured public humiliation. The girlfriends he ran through and the scandalous accusations of violence made by some of them. A complex and fascinating story, Jim Brown is a towering biography of a living legend.
