Harmonic Analysis and Special Functions on Symmetric Spaces
By: Heckman, Gerrit
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)
The two parts of this sharply focused book, Hypergeometric and Special Functions and Harmonic Analysis on Semisimple Symmetric Spaces, are derived from lecture notes for the European School of Group Theory, a forum providing high-level courses on recent developments in group theory. The authors provide students and researchers with a thorough and thoughtful overview, elaborating on the topic with clear statements of definitions and theorems and augmenting these withtime-saving examples. An extensive set of notes supplements the text. Heckman and Schlichtkrull extend the ideas of harmonic analysis on semisimple symmetric spaces to embrace the theory of hypergeometric and spherical functions and show that the K-variant Eisenstein integrals for G/H are hypergeometric functions under this theory. They lead readers from the fundamentals of semisimple symmetric spaces of G/H to the frontier, including generalization, to the Riemannian case. This volume will interest harmonic analysts, those working on or applying the theory of symmetric spaces; it will also appeal to those with an interest in special functions.

Harmonic Mappings in the Plane
By: Duren, Peter; Bollobas, B.; Fulton, W.; Katok, A.; Kirwan, F.; Sarnak, P.; Simon, B.
Published by: Cambridge University Press
This first comprehensive account of the theory of planar harmonic mappings, meant for non-specialists, treats both the generalizations of univalent analytic functions and the connections with minimal surfaces. Included are background material in complex analysis and a full development of the classical theory of minimal surfaces, including the Weierstrass-Enneper representation.

History of Topology
By: James, I.M.
Published by: North Holland
Topology, for many years, has been one of the most exciting and influential fields of research in modern mathematics. Although its origins may be traced back several hundred years, it was Poincaré who "gave topology wings" in a classic series of articles published around the turn of the century. While the earlier history, sometimes called the prehistory, is also considered, this volume is mainly concerned with the more recent history of topology, from Poincaré onwards. As will be seen from the list of contents the articles cover a wide range of topics. Some are more technical than others, but the reader without a great deal of technical knowledge should still find most of the articles accessible. Some are written by professional historians of mathematics, others by historically-minded mathematicians, who tend to have a different viewpoint.

Inherently Parallel Algorithms in Feasibility and Optimization and their Applications
By: Butnariu, D.; Reich, S.; Censor, Y.
Published by: North Holland
The Haifa 2000 Workshop on "Inherently Parallel Algorithms for Feasibility and Optimization and their Applications" brought together top scientists in this area. The objective of the Workshop was to discuss, analyze and compare the latest developments in this fast growing field of applied mathematics and to identify topics of research which are of special interest for industrial applications and for further theoretical study. Inherently parallel algorithms, that is, computational methods which are, by their mathematical nature, parallel, have been studied in various contexts for more than fifty years. However, it was only during the last decade that they have mostly proved their practical usefulness because new generations of computers made their implementation possible in order to solve complex feasibility and optimization problems involving huge amounts of data via parallel processing. These led to an accumulation of computational experience and theoretical information and opened new and challenging questions concerning the behavior of inherently parallel algorithms for feasibility and optimization, their convergence in new environments and in circumstances in which they were not considered before their stability and reliability. Several research groups all over the world focused on these questions and it was the general feeling among scientists involved in this effort that the time has come to survey the latest progress and convey a perspective for further development and concerted scientific investigations. Thus, the editors of this volume, with the support of the Israeli Academy for Sciences and Humanities, took the initiative of organizing a Workshop intended to bring together the leading scientists in the field. The current volume is the Proceedings of the Workshop representing the discussions, debates and communications that took place. Having all that information collected in a single book will provide mathematicians and engineers interested in th

Introduction to Möbius Differential Geometry
By: Hertrich-Jeromin, Udo; Cassels, J. W. S.
Published by: Cambridge University Press
An introduction to the conformal differential geometry of surfaces and submanifolds. The book discusses those aspects of the geometry of surfaces that only refer to an angle measurement but not to a length measurement. The book presents different methods (models) for thinking about geometry and performing computations.
