Heights in Diophantine Geometry
By: Bombieri, Enrico; Gubler, Walter; Bollobas, Bela; Fulton, William; Katok, Anatole; Kirwan, Frances; Sarnak, Peter; Simon, Barry
Published by: Cambridge University Press

Diophantine geometry has been studied by number theorists for thousands of years, this monograph is a bridge between the classical theory and modern approach via arithmetic geometry. The treatment is largely self-contained, with proofs given in full detail. Many results appear here for the first time. more...

Higher-Dimensional Geometry over Finite Fields
By: Kaledin, D. (ed.); Tschinkel, Y. (ed.)
Published by: IOS Press

Number systems based on a finite collection of symbols, such as the 0s and 1s of computer circuitry, are ubiquitous in the modern age. Finite fields are the important number systems. This title introduces the reader to the developments in algebraic geometry over finite fields. more...

History of Topology
By: James, I.M.
Published by: North Holland

Topology, for many years, has been one of the most exciting and influential fields of research in modern mathematics. Although its origins may be traced back several hundred years, it was Poincaré who "gave topology wings" in a classic series of articles published around the turn of the century. While the earlier history, sometimes called the prehistory, is also considered, this volume is mainly concerned with the more recent history of topology, from Poincaré onwards. As will be seen from the list of contents the articles cover a wide range of topics. Some are more technical than others, but the reader without a great deal of technical knowledge should still find most of the articles accessible. Some are written by professional historians of mathematics, others by historically-minded mathematicians, who tend to have a different viewpoint. more...

Hodge Theory and Complex Algebraic Geometry I
By: Voisin, Claire; Schneps, Leila; Bollobas, B.; Fulton, W.; Katok, A.; Kirwan, F.; Sarnak, P.
Published by: Cambridge University Press

This is a completely self-contained modern introduction to Kaehlerian geometry and Hodge structure. The author proves the Kaehler identities, which leads to the hard Lefschetz theorem and the Hodge index theorem. Aimed at students, the text is complemented by exercises which provide useful results in complex algebraic geometry. more...

Hodge Theory and Complex Algebraic Geometry II
By: Voisin, Claire; Schneps, Leila; Bollobas, B.; Fulton, W.; Katok, A.; Kirwan, F.; Sarnak, P.
Published by: Cambridge University Press

The second volume of this modern, self-contained account of Kaehlerian geometry and Hodge theory continues Voisin's study of topology of families of algebraic varieties and the relationships between Hodge theory and algebraic cycles. Aimed at researchers, the text is complemented by exercises which provide useful results in complex algebraic geometry. more...

The Hodge Theory Of Projective Manifolds
By: de Cataldo, Mark Andrea
Published by: Imperial College Press

This book is a written-up and expanded version of eight lectures on the Hodge theory of projective manifolds. It assumes very little background and aims at describing how the theory becomes progressively richer and more beautiful as one specializes from Riemannian, to Kähler, to complex projective manifolds. Though the proof of the Hodge Theorem is omitted, its consequences — topological, geometrical and algebraic — are discussed at some length. The special properties of complex projective manifolds constitute an important body of knowledge and readers are guided through it with the help of selected exercises. Despite starting with very few prerequisites, the concluding chapter works out, in the meaningful special case of surfaces, the proof of a special property of maps between complex projective manifolds, which was discovered only quite recently. more...

Holomorphic Morse Inequalities and Bergman Kernels
By: Ma, Xiaonan; Marinescu, George
Published by: Springer

Gives a self-contained approach of holomorphic Morse inequalities and the asymptotic expansion of the Bergman kernel on manifolds by using the heat kernel. This book opens perspectives on several active areas of research in complex, Kahler and symplectic geometry. more...

Inherently Parallel Algorithms in Feasibility and Optimization and their Applications
By: Butnariu, D.; Reich, S.; Censor, Y.
Published by: North Holland

The Haifa 2000 Workshop on "Inherently Parallel Algorithms for Feasibility and Optimization and their Applications" brought together top scientists in this area. The objective of the Workshop was to discuss, analyze and compare the latest developments in this fast growing field of applied mathematics and to identify topics of research which are of special interest for industrial applications and for further theoretical study. Inherently parallel algorithms, that is, computational methods which are, by their mathematical nature, parallel, have been studied in various contexts for more than fifty years. However, it was only during the last decade that they have mostly proved their practical usefulness because new generations of computers made their implementation possible in order to solve complex feasibility and optimization problems involving huge amounts of data via parallel processing. These led to an accumulation of computational experience and theoretical information and opened new and challenging questions concerning the behavior of inherently parallel algorithms for feasibility and optimization, their convergence in new environments and in circumstances in which they were not considered before their stability and reliability. Several research groups all over the world focused on these questions and it was the general feeling among scientists involved in this effort that the time has come to survey the latest progress and convey a perspective for further development and concerted scientific investigations. Thus, the editors of this volume, with the support of the Israeli Academy for Sciences and Humanities, took the initiative of organizing a Workshop intended to bring together the leading scientists in the field. The current volume is the Proceedings of the Workshop representing the discussions, debates and communications that took place. Having all that information collected in a single book will provide mathematicians and engineers interested in th more...
