Inherently Parallel Algorithms in Feasibility and Optimization and their Applications
By: Butnariu, D.; Reich, S.; Censor, Y.
Published by: North Holland

The Haifa 2000 Workshop on "Inherently Parallel Algorithms for Feasibility and Optimization and their Applications" brought together top scientists in this area. The objective of the Workshop was to discuss, analyze and compare the latest developments in this fast growing field of applied mathematics and to identify topics of research which are of special interest for industrial applications and for further theoretical study. Inherently parallel algorithms, that is, computational methods which are, by their mathematical nature, parallel, have been studied in various contexts for more than fifty years. However, it was only during the last decade that they have mostly proved their practical usefulness because new generations of computers made their implementation possible in order to solve complex feasibility and optimization problems involving huge amounts of data via parallel processing. These led to an accumulation of computational experience and theoretical information and opened new and challenging questions concerning the behavior of inherently parallel algorithms for feasibility and optimization, their convergence in new environments and in circumstances in which they were not considered before their stability and reliability. Several research groups all over the world focused on these questions and it was the general feeling among scientists involved in this effort that the time has come to survey the latest progress and convey a perspective for further development and concerted scientific investigations. Thus, the editors of this volume, with the support of the Israeli Academy for Sciences and Humanities, took the initiative of organizing a Workshop intended to bring together the leading scientists in the field. The current volume is the Proceedings of the Workshop representing the discussions, debates and communications that took place. Having all that information collected in a single book will provide mathematicians and engineers interested in th more...

An Introduction to Differential Geometry with Applications to Elasticity
By: Ciarlet, Philippe G.
Published by: Springer

Presents the basic theorems of differential geometry in three-dimensional space, including a coverage of surface theory. By means of a series of mathematical models, this monograph also explains how these theorems are used in three-dimensional elasticity and in shell theory. more...

The Isomorphism Problem In Coxeter Groups
By: Bahls, Patrick
Published by: Imperial College Press

The book is the first to give a comprehensive overview of the techniques and tools currently being used in the study of combinatorial problems in Coxeter groups. It is self-contained, and accessible even to advanced undergraduate students of mathematics. The primary purpose of the book is to highlight approximations to the difficult isomorphism problem in Coxeter groups. A number of theorems relating to this problem are stated and proven. Most of the results addressed here concern conditions which can be seen as varying degrees of uniqueness of representations of Coxeter groups. Throughout the investigation, the readers are introduced to a large number of tools in the theory of Coxeter groups, drawn from dozens of recent articles by prominent researchers in geometric and combinatorial group theory, among other fields. As the central problem of the book may in fact be solved soon, the book aims to go further, providing the readers with many techniques that can be used to answer more general questions. The readers are challenged to practice those techniques by solving exercises, a list of which concludes each chapter. more...

Iterated Integrals And Cycles On Algebraic Manifolds
By: Harris, Bruno
Published by: World Scientific

This subject has been of great interest both to topologists and to number theorists. The first part of this book describes some of the work of Kuo-Tsai Chen on iterated integrals and the fundamental group of a manifold. The author attempts to make his exposition accessible to beginning graduate students. He then proceeds to apply Chen's constructions to algebraic geometry, showing how this leads to some results on algebraic cycles and the Abel–Jacobi homomorphism. Finally, he presents a more general point of view relating Chen's integrals to a generalization of the concept of linking numbers, and ends up with a new invariant of homology classes in a projective algebraic manifold. The book is based on a course given by the author at the Nankai Institute of Mathematics in the fall of 2001. more...
