Published by: Wiley-Blackwell

This landmark publication collates information and studies on the use of estuaries, and specific habitats within them, as nursery, feeding and refuge areas, and migration routes of marine and other fish, many of which are of commercial and conservation importance. The editors and authors of the book have carefully compiled a huge wealth of information from the work of 18 organizations across 11 countries, providing a unique collection of data never before brought together within the covers of one book. Chapters within this exceptional publication cover habitat use by fishes, recruitment and production in estuaries, links between fish and other trophic levels, endangered and rare species, estuarine development and restoration, environmental quality of estuaries and the management of estuarine fishes. The book notably contains extensive chapters on field methods and data analysis. Fishes in Estuaries is an essential tool and reference source for fisheries and environmental managers, fish biologists, environmental scientists, aquatic ecologists and conservation biologists. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where biological sciences are studied and taught should have copies of this book on their shelves, as should personnel employed in regulatory and consultant capacities, such as within rivers authorities, environment agencies and fish and wildlife departments.:.; Comprehensive coverage of commercially exploited species.; Internationally known and respected contributors.; Multi-contributor approach providing very detailed coverage.; Estuaries are a vitally important ecosystem. more...

Fishing for Coherence
By: OECD Publishing
Published by: Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)

For millions of people in developing countries, fisheries represent a means of livelihood, a source of food and nutrition, and a source of wealth for economic growth. Fish often constitutes the sole source of protein for many people, especially the poor. Yet the risks to sustainable fisheries are high. Three quarters of global marine fisheries are overexploited or fully exploited, and the pressure on fish stocks is increasing. Demand for fish in the developed countries, which currently absorb 80% of traded fish, is increasing while the demand for fish in developing countries is likely to augment as income levels rise. For OECD and non-OECD countries alike, the global fisheries situation poses topical questions of coherence between development and fisheries in a number of policy areas. This publication examines these questions and proposes a framework for in-depth analysis of coherence issues in five main policy areas where fisheries and development policies interact, namely environmental, technology, economic, social, and governance policies. The framework is illustrated with ten concrete country and regional case studies, analysing issues that range from international fishing agreements and the relationship between industrial and artisanal fishing fleets to fisheries trade and development policies, as well as fisheries development and poverty reduction. For the researcher – as for the consumer and connoisseur – this book also offers a glossary to help the reader understand commonly-used, as well as more exotic, French and English terms for fish and seafood. . This report was also published as a chapter in Review of Fisheries in OECD Countries: Volume 1: Policies and Summary Statistics, 2005 Edition. Also in this series:.:.; Fostering Development in a Global Economy: A Whole of Government Perspective.; Policy Coherence for Development: Promoting Institutional Good Practice.; Agriculture and Development: The Case for Policy Coherence.; Migration, Remittances and more...

Fishing for Coherence
By: OECD Publishing
Published by: Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)

Policy coherence entails the application of mutually reinforcing policies across government departments to achieve objectives consistent with internationally agreed development goals. The current fisheries situation poses particularly interesting issues of policy coherence, both in terms of ensuring sustainable and responsible fisheries and with regard to the major importance of developing countries as suppliers of fish to OECD markets. Some 500 million USD are spent annually on fisheries development projects. Concurrently, fisheries access agreements and trade policies are sometimes applied in ways that dampen developing countries' ability to benefit fully from their rich marine resources. Also, many development projects do not pay sufficient regard to the sustainability issues that are a key for the future of the fishing sector. The fisheries sector is central sector for poverty reduction in many developing countries. Analysis of these issues is novel and offers important insights into how the development and fisheries policy communities need to advance their future co-operation to ensure sustainable and responsible fisheries. This publication is a compilation of papers and records of the Workshop on Policy Coherence for Development in Fisheries, hosted by the OECD's Committee for Fisheries and Development Assistance Committee in Paris 24-25 April 2006. more...

Food Intake in Fish
By: Houlihan, Dominic (ed.); Boujard, Thierry (ed.); Jobling, Malcolm (ed.)
Published by: Wiley-Blackwell

The intake of food by fishes is an area of study that is of great importance to the applied sciences of fisheries and aquaculture for a number of reasons. For example a thorough knowledge of factors influencing the ingestion of feed can lead to successful manipulation of the rearing environment of cultured fishes, thereby ensuring improved growth performance and feed utilisation, and decreasing the amount of waste (and consequent pollution) per unit of fish produced. This important book, which has arisen out of a European Union COST programme, illustrates how insights into the biological and environmental factors that underlie the feeding responses of fish may be used to address practical issues of feed management. Food Intake in Fish contains carefully edited contributions from internationally recognised scientists, providing a book that is an invaluable tool and reference to all those involved in aquaculture, especially those working in the aquaculture feed industry and scientific personnel in commercial and research aquaculture facilities. This book should also find a place on the shelves of fish biologists and physiologists and as a reference in libraries of universities, research establishments and aquaculture equipment companies. more...

Geographic Information Systems in Oceanography and Fisheries
By: Valavanis, Vasilis D.
Published by: CRC Press

Over the last two decades there has been increasing recognition that problems in Oceanography and Fisheries Sciences and related marine areas are nearly all manifest in the spatio-temporal domain. Geographical Information Systems (GIS), the natural framework for spatial data handling, are being recognised as a powerful tool with useful applications in marine sciences. This book provides a thorough examination of marine GIS applications that include a high variety of methods and sophisticated approaches in coastal, continental shelf, and deep ocean studies. It presents new innovative approaches of using GIS in the examination of the dynamic relations that characterize the marine world, including marine GIS macro routines for the development of Oceanography and Fisheries GIS tools and applications. Some application examples include: the mapping of fish production data (catch and landings); the identification of essential fish habitats; and the mapping of species migration corridors. Anyone with interests in marine GIS development, physical and biological oceanography, fisheries and information based proposals for ocean and fisheries resource management will find this book useful. more...
