Advances in Automation for Plastics Injection Moulding
By: Mallon, John
Published by: iSmithers Rapra Publishing

Automation serves one main purpose: to generate cost savings. Most moulding facilities have made upstream processes, such as resin material handling, automatic. The injection moulding process itself is highly automated. However, once the mould opens, many plants use direct and indirect labour to add value, to package, and to move parts. The post-moulding operations therefore remain the biggest area for cost-saving potential. Moulders will need to use technology and automation to achieve quality and low-cost goals. The automation will need to be flexible to adapt to shorter product life cycles, shorter runs and quicker product introductions. There are few complete technical sources of information available for plastic injection moulders to use relating to automation. However, there have been articles written on various components of the technology. This review has been compiled by researching and analysing technical references. The overview is not an attempt to describe robot design theory and engineering, which can be found in engineering publications, but is intended to describe the basics of the technology and to explain how to put the technology to use. The review is supplemented by an indexed section containing several hundred abstracts from the Polymer Library, providing useful references for further reading. Key features: Chronicles the advances of robot technology for plastics injection moulding.; Describes the main robot configurations.; Provides examples of successful automation; Considers future developments. Advances in BioChirality
By: Pályi, G.; Zucchi, C.; Caglioti, L.
Published by: Elsevier Science

Chirality is a fundamental, persistent, but often overlooked feature of all living organisms on the molecular level as well as on the macroscopic scale. The high degree of preference for only one of two possible mirror image forms in Nature, often called biological homochirality is a puzzling, and not yet fully understood, phenomenon. This book covers biological homochirality from an interdisciplinary approach - contributions range from synthetic chemists, theoretical topologists and physicists, from palaeontologists and biologists to space scientists and representatives of the pharmaceutical and materials industries. Topics covered include -. theory of biochirality,. origins of biochirality,. autocatalysis with amplification of chirality,. macroscopic (present) biochirality,. fossil records of chiral organisms - paleochirality,. extraterrestrial origin of chirality,. exceptions to the rule of biological homochirality, D-amino acids,. chemical transfer of chirality,. PV effects, and. polarised radiation chemistry. more...

Advances in Biosensors
By: Malhotra, Bansi Dhar; Turner, Anthony
Published by: JAI Press

There is a worldwide effort towards the development of bioanalytical devices that can be used for detection, quantification and monitoring of specific chemical species. In this context, biosensors represent an emerging trend in the diagnostics industry. A biosensor is a device that has a biological sensing element either intimately connected to or integrated within a transducer. The aim is to produce a digital electronic signal that is proportional to the concentration of a specific chemical or a set of chemicals. Biosensors are specific, rapid, cost-effective and easy to use devices that can be employed with minimal sample treatment. Biosensors have applications in many areas such as biotechnology, healthcare, pollution monitoring, food and agriculture product monitoring, the pharmaceuticals industry and defense. This reference text is devoted to the principles and applications of biosensors and meets the needs of academic institutes, research laboratories and the rapidly developing biosensor industry. more...

Advances in Carbene Chemistry, Volume 2
By: Brinker, U.H.
Published by: JAI Press

Advances in Group Processes publishes theoretical analyses, reviews, and theory-based empirical chapters on group phenomena. Volume 24 includes papers that address fundamental issues relating to the Social Psychology of Gender. The social psychology of gender analyzes the ways gender shapes and is shaped by social interaction. This includes the cognitive processes through which gender influences the way we perceive, interpret, and respond to our social world; it also includes the mechanisms through which interaction defines and transmits meaning about gender. The volume emphasizes the importance of understanding gender as a multilevel structure that includes cultural beliefs and distributions of resources at the macro level, patterns of behavior at the interactional level, as well as roles and identities at the micro level. The volume begins with an introduction that discusses the overall theoretical and methodological orientation of the social psychology of gender. The first chapter after the introduction reviews the history of gender research in psychology, and in particular provides excellent accounts of research on “benevolent sexism” and “backlash effects”. The second chapter provides an overview of research on two types of stereotyping – descriptive and prescriptive – as well as offering suggestions for organizations interested in pre-empting these types of bias. The third chapter reviews recent research on the role that beliefs about gender play in organizational decision-making, with an emphasis on hiring and firing decisions. The fourth chapter synthesizes a range of literatures in order to explain how interactional mechanisms restrict women’s ability to be both liked and respected, such that their choices are often made by navigating pragmatic alternatives rather than any explicit consent to hierarchical gender relations. The fifth chapter develops a theory of the authors that addresses the interaction of gender and socia more...
