ARIS RETURNS
A Vampire Love Story

Psychologist Sarah Hagan thought she had her life under control. She pulled herself together after a painful (and unexpected) divorce. She’s currently dating a successful but neglectful attorneya relationship that is adequate, if not totally satisfying. She has a few good friends, lives in a beautiful condo in the heart of Chicago, and loves her work as a therapist. From the outside, it looks like her life is almost perfect.

It only takes one patient -- a handsome younger man named Carlos who is on parole for car theft -- to put her well-ordered life into a tailspin. As she regresses him with hypnotherapy, she discovers an unusual presence. Is this some elaborate alter ego that Carlos has created or is something much stranger going on? In Sarah’s attempt to help Carlos deal with his issues of anger and a troubled past, she is captivated by the persona she uncovers through hypnosis Aris. Aris reveals that he is a vampire whose story begins in the time of Alexander the Great. His retelling of his lives, involvement and apparent demise in the court of Henry VIII keep her spellbound and hungry for more.

On top of grappling with a phantom vampire, Sarah begins to have the most disturbing (and sensual) dreams. They awake the emotion, passion and vulnerability that she thought she had buried for good. The dreams both terrify and excite her as she struggles to make sense out of her world turned upside down. Sarah genuinely cares about Carlos as a patient and wants to help him find his way to a better life, but he has brought chaos, confusion and danger into her neatly buttoned-up reality. And if that’s not enough to deal with, she is inexplicably drawn to Aris in a way she can’t begin to rationalize. Can Sarah possibly love this vampire ghost” or will he destroy everything she treasures?

Kirkus Reviews:

A surprising twist on the vampire trend.

Psychologist and hypnotist Sarah Hagan is enjoying her new found success as the author of Psychosis and Past Life Regression, a study whose subject she has obsessed over since her painful divorce. Her private practice flourishing, she’s comforted by a handful of close, supportive friends. When one of these friends, a parole officer named Colleen, calls Sarah asking for her help with Carlos, a troubled young ex-con, Sarah is reluctant. Upon hearing more about the youth’s intelligence and sensitivity, however, she agrees to help him overcome his anger issues through hypnosis. What Sarah and Carlos discover through their sessions is more mysterious than even the workings of the subconscious mind: Under hypnosis, Carlos, a survivor of childhood abuse and gang violence, reveals an entirely different self, one who has lived for centuries. This self, Aris, has fought with Alexander the Great and plotted with Queen Anne Boleyn. He has manipulated and murderedand he’s a vampire. Although she tries to convince herself that Aris is simply Carlos’ subconscious archetypal projection, Sarah begins to harbor doubts about the capacity of her own scientific training to explain the detail and complexity of his hypnosis-induced stories. Over the course of their sessions, Sarah and Carlos are drawn together not only by their shared fascination with Aris’ tale, but by a romantic attraction that threatens to destroy them both.

Author Morgan weaves together the thrilling history with a contemporary love story that comes together in an action-filled climaxand an enticing cliffhangerthat will leaves readers thirsty for more.

Blending sensual fantasy and the supernatural, this vampire saga takes a welcome turn. - Kirkus Reviews

Jeff Favre, HerBusyLife.com Critic:

It takes some real creativity to put a new spin on the genre, but enter Aris Returns: A Vampire Love Story by Devin Morgan. A clinical hypnotherapist, Morgan has integrated her knowledge of the subconscious with a meticulously crafted historical landscape and a romantic relationship drama.

The result is an enjoyable vampire tale for people not into vampires, and a historical romance for people who aren’t into history. It stems from well-drawn characters and an ever-progressing plot.

The protagonist is Sarah, a Chicago-based hypnotherapist who is given the challenging task of counseling Carlos, a troubled young man who is trying to escape his gang past and difficult home life. Sarah has her own problems, but she’s able to put them on hold during sessions with Carlos. She begins putting him under with the hopes that his subconscious will reveal keys to helping him improve. What she doesn’t see coming is that Carlos appears to have regressed to a past life where he is not only living in the time of Alexander that Great but that he is a member of the undead.

Meanwhile, back in the present, Morgan’s story deals with Carlos’ escalating issues and Sarah’s somewhat dysfunctional personal life. Already interesting enough, Morgan adds a sci-fi element to her time-leaping tale that is unique in the vampire genre. . . . Morgan has created such realistic characters, even the supporting ones, that the fantasy elements don’t seem as out of place as they do in lesser works. Jeff Favre, HerBusyLife.com Critic
