Risky Foods, Safer Choices confirms what many people may have suspected - the incidence of food poisoning is on the rise. Triggering such public suspicions has been an ongoing procession of horror incidents involving such foods as salami, oysters, pork rolls, fruit salad and even orange juice that have resulted in the serious illness and even death of consumers.

It does not mean we have reason to panic. The authors believe that Australia has a very good record on food safety issues. The local food industry goes to great lengths to ensure food is safe to eat. However, inevitably things go wrong, occasionally with tragic results.

Risky Foods, Safer Choices helps consumers in practical ways by:

  • helping them identify risky foods and develop their own protection strategies;
  • providing practical guidelines for making "safer choices", particularly for those most often at risk;
  • identifying which food-borne micro-organisms present the most serious hazards to people in different age groups;
  • providing effective guidelines to food and drink selection for travellers, both within Australia and overseas.

    Risky Foods, Safer Choices helps consumers avoid the possibly tragic consequences of food poisoning. Its focus is on relatively short-term health effects of good food selection rather than longer-term health effects.

    John Ashton is the chief chemist for a major Australian food corporation and Conjoint Senior Lecturer in Food Technology at the University of Newcastle. He has written two books and co-authored five more, including The Perils of Progress and Risky Foods, Safer Choices.
