Written by Anthony Keiley, a confederate soldier from Virginia, In Vinculis or The Prisoner of War tells the story of his experiences in two federal prisons during the Civil War. Keiley was captured when Generals Gillmore and Kautz were sent to capture Petersburg, and destroy the railroad and common bridges across the Appomatox in June of 1864.

A revised edition was issued in response to the false depictions of southern character put forth by the northern press. At the same time he urged other soldiers to contribute their experiences of the atrocities committed against the people of the southern states by the Union armies in the name of liberty.
