Ed Bonekemper is Book Review Editor of Civil War News and a former adjunct lecturer in military history at Muhlenberg College. He earned a B.A. cum laude in American history from Muhlenberg College, an M.A. in American history from Old Dominion University, and a J.D. from Yale Law School. His prior Civil War books are Grant and Lee: Victorious American and Vanquished Virginian (Praeger/Greenwood, Westport, Connecticut and London, 2008) (reissued as e-book, 2010); McClellan and Failure: A Study of Civil War Fear, Incompetence and Worse (McFarland & Company, Jefferson, North Carolina, 2007) (reissued in softcover, 2010); A Victor, Not a Butcher: Ulysses S. Grant’s Overlooked Military Genius (Regnery Publishing, Inc., Washington, D.C., 2004) (nominated, by request, for the Lincoln Prize of the Civil War Institute) (reissued in softcover as Ulysses S. Grant: A Victor, Not a Butcher, 2010); How Robert E. Lee Lost the Civil War (Sergeant Kirkland’s Press, Fredericksburg, VA, 1998, hardcover and softcover) (reissued as e-book, 2010). Ed is a frequent speaker (hundred of appearances) at Civil War Roundtables (Chicago, Milwaukee, New York, Washington, LA, San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, Scottsdale, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Wilmington, etc.) and other groups. He has been a guest speaker at the Smithsonian Institution (six times), the Chautauqua Institute, the Delta Queen, the Lincoln Group of Washington, and other prestigious organizations. He served as a Federal Government attorney-manager for over 34 years, including 11 years on active duty with the U.S. Coast Guard. He is a retired Commander, U.S. Coast Guard Reserve.
