In academia, a Festschrift [1] is a publication honoring a respected academic. It contains original contributions from former PhD students and close colleagues which advance the scholarship or science of a specific discipline. Typically published on the academic’s birthday or on some notable anniversary, it is a “celebration publication”. There is no English word for this publication, and so the word “Festschrift” is widely used.

When we first issued the call for papers, for a special Festschrift issue of Information Technology & People honoring Rob Kling and his work in social informatics, we did not realize that an alternate term is used when the academic being honored is deceased. Owing to Werner Beuschel and Heinz Klein, we now know that the correct term to use for this memorial issue is Gedenkschrift. Thus, we offer this Gedenkschrift to honor Rob Kling’s legacy, and to celebrate his life and commemorate his scholarship. Rob was a longtime supporter of the journal and an active member of the editorial board since 1986. For his special issue, we sought papers that could highlight, extend, and critically examine the concepts and issues of social informatics. The authors that responded to the call have maintained the vitality of the field Rob helped to shape, and their papers reflect the energy that Rob brought to this work and to society.
