This volume contains a selection of the health policy research and analytic studies constituting the OECD Health Project. These policy studies, along with other volumes, serve as the main source material for the synthesis report of the Project, Towards High-Performing Health Systems.

The original findings reported here include:
•  a review and assessment of the experience with health-care reforms across the OECD area;
•  an investigation of recent attempts to monitor and improve the quality of care in a sample of OECD countries;
•  an empirical analysis of income-related equity in use of health-care services

•  a study of imbalances in the supply and demand for doctors and nurses;
•  a comparison of policies to tackle excessive waiting times for elective surgery;
•  an evaluation of the impact of different types of private health insurance on health-system performance; and
•  new projections on the impact of ageing on health and long-term care expenditure.

This collection of policy studies reinforces one of the central messages from the OECD Health Project, that is, the need to further increase value for money in health systems in order to ensure better and adequate access to health care in the future.
