Twice a year, the OECD Economic Outlook analyses the major trends that will mark the next two years. The present issue covers the outlook to the end of 2006 and examines the economic policies required to foster high and sustainable growth in member countries. Developments in major non-OECD economies are also evaluated. Together with a wide range of cross-country statistics, the Outlook provides a unique tool to keep abreast of world economic developments.

In addition to the themes featured regularly, this issue contains two analytical chapters addressing the following questions:

  • What are the main drivers behind the recent spike in oil prices? Has the “equilibrium price” of oil increased in the past few years and if so, why? What are the economic consequences of oil price shocks and what are the appropriate policy responses in the face of such shocks?
  • To what extent may fiscal policy actions be offset by simultaneous, anticipatory changes in private saving? How does such behaviour differ between countries? How does the composition of the fiscal action -- revenue, current spending or public investment -- affect the private saving offset?
