All parents know that children go to school to learn, but what some don’t know is that what children manage to learn at school depends a lot on what they learn at home in the preschool years.

Most children who are well prepared in the preschool years do well at school. This book helps parents understand how their child learns and what they can do to make learning happen as easily and effectively as possible, regardless of the child’s natural strengths or weaknesses. Our ideas are based on many years of research and experience as learning professionals working with children of all ages and all levels of ability, and their parents.

We believe that learning can have many purposes throughout childhood, but the most important purposes are to reach one’s full potential and to enjoy a happy life. This happens when adults respond to their child’s needs, guide their child’s activities, and take an interest in whatever their child is interested in. We think that most parents want the best for their children, but may not always know how to make this happen. Children have the right to be happy being who they are. Whether they are comfortable with simple activities or complex ones, they need opportunities to learn the things they need to know from adults who are effective and caring. This can only happen if they are in a supportive environment where the adults around them have the child’s interests at heart and know how to follow some basic guidelines. Those guidelines are what this book is about.

Although these guidelines are based on a lot of theory and research in psychology and education, we have tried as far as possible to stick to a balanced appraisal of the evidence and a practical approach. This book is based on extensive research and clinical experience on assessment and intervention in children’s learning and behaviour. We aren’t just drawing on our own experience or untested theories. The principles, recommendations and activities presented in this book have been thoroughly tested with children and families in international research.

Our approach has been to fill an important gap between what is already available and what parents want to know about their child’s preschool development as a learner.
